Business tax preparation in Woodside, NY

Form 1120-S, Form 1120, Form 1065 and the New York State and New York City returns that go with them — prepared from your books, reviewed by a CPA, and e-filed before the deadline rather than on it.

✓ Federal, NYS and NYC filings✓ Fixed fee agreed up front✓ K-1s to owners with the return

Most of the business returns that come through this office arrive one of two ways. Either the books are clean and the return is a matter of getting the elections and the state allocations right, or the books are a shoebox and the real work is reconstructing a year before anyone can file anything. We do both, and we tell you which one you have before we quote you.

What we will not do is file something we have not looked at. Every return is prepared by a preparer, reviewed line by line by a CPA, and compared against the prior year before it is transmitted. If a number moved more than we would expect, we ask you why before the IRS does.

Business Tax Returns in Woodside, NY

The returns we file most

Woodside and Sunnyside are small-business neighborhoods: restaurants, contractors, medical and dental practices, salons, bodegas, freight and car services, and a long tail of consultants who incorporated last year and are not sure what they signed up for.

Form 1120-S — S corporations

Including the reasonable-compensation analysis, the basis schedule, and the K-1 each shareholder needs before filing personally.

Form 1065 — partnerships and multi-member LLCs

Operating-agreement allocations, guaranteed payments, capital accounts kept on the correct basis, and Schedules K-2 and K-3 where foreign partners or foreign income are in play.

Form 1120 — C corporations

Less common at this size, but the right answer more often than founders expect once fringe benefits or retained earnings enter the picture.

Schedule C — sole proprietors and single-member LLCs

Filed with the personal return, but priced and worked as a business engagement because that is what it is.

New York State and New York City

CT-3, CT-3-S, IT-204, the NYC General Corporation and Business Corporation taxes, the Unincorporated Business Tax, and the MTA surcharge that catches out every accountant from outside the metro area.

The pass-through entity tax election

New York's PTET is still money left on the table by a lot of small S corps. We run the numbers each year rather than assuming last year's answer still holds.

What we need from you

The faster this arrives the cheaper the engagement is, and we will tell you honestly when your bookkeeping is costing you more in preparation fees than a bookkeeper would cost.

A trial balance or a QuickBooks file

Whatever you have. If you do not have one, say so — reconstruction is a service, not a failing.

Bank and credit card statements for the year

All accounts the business touched, including the personal card everyone swears they only used twice.

Payroll reports

The four 941s, the NYS-45s, and the W-2 and W-3 totals.

Fixed asset purchases

Anything bought over about a thousand dollars, with the invoice, so we can make the Section 179 and bonus-depreciation call properly.

Loan documents and closing statements

For anything financed, refinanced, bought or sold during the year.

Last year's return

If we did not prepare it. We read it — carryforwards and elections live there.

Deadlines we work to

We ask for complete records four weeks before the deadline. Files that arrive later are extended rather than rushed, because a rushed return is how carryforwards get dropped and elections get missed.

March 15

S corporations and partnerships, calendar year. Extended to September 15.

April 15

C corporations and individuals. Extended to October 15.

Quarterly

Federal and New York estimated payments, which we calculate with the return rather than leaving you to guess.

Typical fees

Quoted in writing before any work starts. Books in reasonable order; reconstruction is quoted separately.

Questions

Business Tax Returns — the questions we are asked most

When is my S corporation return due?

March 15 for a calendar-year S corporation, with an automatic six-month extension to September 15 if we file Form 7004. The extension moves the filing date, not the payment date, so any tax the shareholders owe personally is still due April 15.

My books are a mess. Will you still take the engagement?

Yes, and you are not the first. We quote the cleanup separately from the return so you can see what each part costs. In most cases the cleanup pays for itself the following year because the return gets cheaper.

Do I have to pay myself a salary from my S corporation?

If you work in the business, yes — the IRS expects reasonable compensation on a W-2 before distributions. Under-paying yourself is one of the most reliably audited positions in small-business tax, and we will tell you where your number sits relative to what is defensible.

Should my LLC elect S corporation status?

Sometimes. It saves self-employment tax once profit is comfortably above what you would have to pay yourself as salary, and it costs you a payroll filing every quarter and a separate return every year. We run the break-even for your actual numbers rather than quoting a rule of thumb.

Can you file in states other than New York?

Yes. Multi-state allocation and nexus questions come up constantly with contractors and consultants working across the Hudson, and we handle New Jersey and Connecticut routinely.
